The Derby is a treasure to Los Angeles and beyond. It is certainly a landmark in our hearts. And, now it is a landmark on paper.
"The Los Feliz Brown Derby" at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. is Historic Cultural Monument #834 of the City of Los Angeles.
Through the Los Angeles Conservancy and the amazing work of Marcello Vavala, a nomination was filed with the Cultural Heritage Commission to have the building declared an official Landmark.
The Commission received the nomination
- The Commission Staff Report initially recommended against considering the nomination
- Derby Supporters including City Councilman Tom LaBonge went to the Commission hearing and fought back! (for a good recap of this meeting click here)
- We successfully convinced the Commission to change its mind and consider the nomination.
- The Commission conducted a site visit of the Derby.
- The Commission held a public hearing and then voted in favor of landmark status.
- The City Council agreed with the Commission and voted unanimously to make the building an official Landmark.
- The "Los Feliz Brown Derby" at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. is now Historic-Cultural Monumen #843 of the City of Los Angeles.
